The Poudrerie Park

By deed of 20 March 1690, the overflow of the water from the mills' canal was sold to King Louis XIV "to be used for the work on the powder hammer that his majesty is having built at the said place of Saint-Chamas".

From a few hectares at the beginning, it now occupies more than 100 hectares by gaining on the marshes of the pond through dykes and embankments. Some of the trees are several hundred years old.

The Poudrerie, which provided a living for several generations of Saint-Chamassens, has now ceased all activity. It has become a large wooded park and a place for walks that cannot be ignored.

The small Camargue

This area of 100 hectares of marshland was created when the waters of the Touloubre (river) met the waters of the Etang de Berre.  The Petite Camargue is home to a variety of natural environments: shellfish coastline, sansouïres, reed beds, wet meadows, riparian forests, scrubland, etc., which allow a diverse range of flora and fauna to establish themselves.

There are 31 species of dragonflies and over 200 species of birds...

The Petite Camargue is also an important nesting, migration and wintering area for birds.
